Men have hot flashes as they age. Who knew? There are many reasons a man can have hot flashes. I have listed the five top reasons:
Andropause
In the past, people thought menopause was a woman’s problem. Annually, more than 25 million men in the United States and more than 408 million men worldwide report having symptoms of male menopause or andropause. One of the most common symptoms of andropause is experiencing hot flashes. Men who are between 40 and 55 years old report hot flashes caused by male menopause. Sometimes, men think these hot flashes are night sweats. When hot flashes show up accompanied by insomnia, weight gain and slowed hair growth, andropause may be to blame.
Aging Hormones
As a man gets older, his body produces less testosterone and androgen. “Partial androgen deficiency of the aging male” or PADAM occurs when the level of androgen drops below normal. This causes a decrease in testosterone production. When androgen and testosterone levels both drop below normal, a man may experience hot flashes or night sweats. When PADAM is the cause, the man may also notice a decrease in his sex drive. This most often occurs during the man’s 50’s, but it can happen as early as the late to mid 30’s or as late as the 60’s.
Cancer or Tumor
In some cases, the cause of male hot flashes is prostate or testicular cancer. Both of these cancers can affect a man’s hormone level. Fluctuating hormone levels can cause hot flashes. If you have hot flashes or night sweats along with testicular pain, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. In addition to these cancers, hot flashes in men may be the result of a tumor located on the pituitary gland or hypothalamus
Illness and Treatments
Hot flashes in men are sometimes the result of an infection or a reaction to medical treatments. Infections, such as HIV and tuberculosis, can cause hot flashes in both men and women. Certain medical treatments, such as hormone deprivation therapy, may cause hot flashes. Medications, such as calcitonin and nifedipine, cause hot flashes in men. In addition, some men may experience hot flashes as a side effect of some antibiotics, such as cephalexin.
Dietary Concerns
When you are trying to determine the cause of hot flashes in men, a look at the man’s diet may show you the cause. In some cases, a reaction to the food additive MSG may be the reason for the hot flashes. To determine if this is the cause of the hot flashes, keep a record of everything that you eat for a few days. Make note of any foods that contain MSG. If you have hot flashes within 24 hours of eating a food that contains MSG, try to eliminate MSG from your diet for 48 hours. If you don’t have hot flashes within 24 hours of finishing your 48-hour cleansing, MSG may be to blame for your hot flashes
If you are having male hot flashes, it is advised that a trip to your doctor to discuss the reasons why and what to do about the hot flashes.
